Oh yeah! It’s that time of year once again! Wrestlemania season! That time of the year when almost everyone (or at least more people that you think) get together and watch the 4 hour extravaganza involving big muscley men and women (and sometimes a zombie or a leprechaun or a voodoo priest) wearing outlandish tight outfits and getting in the ring in front of thousands of people for a fight that’s not really a fight...but still very treacherous nonetheless. The pro wrestling and pop culture community in general are mourning the sudden passing of one of the squared circle's icons, Dusty Rhodes. He was 69. Rhodes (born Virgil Runnels Jr.) was internationally known for being one of the most charasmatic and influential superstars in the wrestling business. A former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, United States Champion and Tag Team Champion, Dusty embodied his character as the "Common Man", and had legendary rivalries with such fellow Hall of Famers, Ric Flair, Macho Man Randy Savage and Ted Dibiase. He was not known for his physique, but "The Son of a Plumber" more than made up for it with his charming microphone skills and remarkable talent for storytelling. Read more...

sg-ntwk_sizzle_today_revOn Monday, February 24, the much anticipated WWE Network was launched to severe loading times and server issues. However, this doesn’t mean that I didn’t like what I saw because WWE has given fans, both young and old, a nice library that should, like the network, improve over time. Before I could even get into the content, I had to wait almost the entire day to sign up as there was a huge lag in the server and many people would get error messages that said the page couldn’t be found. There were still problems to be had as it seemed that the network worked best at night than during the day. Read more...

WWE-Royal-Rumble-2014-PosterIt’s that time of year again! Some people would say the most exciting wrestling event of the year is Wrestlemania, some will argue it's Survivor Series, but ever since I was a wee little Hulkamaniac, The Royal Rumble was the event that made me the most excited! There are of course, regular matches on the card, but the main attraction was always the Royal Rumble match itself, an over-the-top-rope battle royale with 30 men competing for a shot at the champ at Wrestlemania! What’s fun about the Rumble is every 2 minutes a random entrant enters the ring, and we’re rarely told all of the entrants ahead of basically ANYONE could show up! Read more...

scott steiner 4When you think of great tag teams, The Road Warriors and The Rock and Roll Express come to mind. The Steiner Brothers were also a great tag team of the 80s and 90s having great feuds with the likes of The Road Warriors and Harlem Heat. Like some tag teams, they break up while each goes onto a singles career that may or may not be successful. In Scott Steiner’s case, the breakup was not only successful, but helped reinvigorate him and gave his career new life. I recently caught up with Big Poppa Pump at the Houston Show Comicpalooza during the Memorial Day weekend to get his thoughts on both of his WWE runs, why he turned heel in 1998 and what he thinks of TNA.   Read more...

2072 - logo monday_nitro wcwIf you were a wrestling fan back in the mid-90s to early 2000s like I was, then you remember the highly competitive Monday Night Wars where WCW and the then-WWF battled it out every Monday night from September 4, 1995 until March 26, 2001 for wrestling supremacy. Eric Bischoff’s brainchild, WCW Monday Nitro, reigned supreme for 83 straight weeks from July 1996 until April of 1998 when WWF made Stone Cold Steve Austin the most popular wrestling superstar of all time when he beat Shawn Michael at Wrestlemania  XIV for the WWF Heavyweight Championship. Nitro and WCW will always be forever remembered in the hearts and minds of many wrestling fans for being the company that took on Vince McMahon and almost won. In the new DVD and Blu-Ray set, The Best of WCW Monday Nitro, Vol. 2, the highs and lows of the groundbreaking wrestling program are chronicled here just like the last volume.   Read more...

FLiX | It was a cool night Friday in early 1988 and I was parked, along with my older sister, mother and father, in front of the television with anticipation as Andre The Giant squared off against Hulk Hogan in his WWF title rematch on The Main Event. The match was very back and forth, but I always knew that Hogan would prevail. He had to because he had overcome the odds so many times before. However, on this night, it wasn’t meant to be as Andre was able to pin Hogan, even though his shoulder was up, and win the WWF title, but then sold it to The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase seconds later as they both celebrated in the ring and a dejected and angry Hogan could only helplessly look on.   I was shocked and angry and wondered had this been a bad dream as it was found that Earl Hebner and his twin brother, Dave, had been in on an elaborate ruse and in the back pocket of DiBiase all long.    Read more...

In The Bleed It's Called Wrestle - Vein - i-a (No it isn't) Bleederz, there’s something I have not shared with you. There’s something I’m geeky about that even the biggest, hardcore geek may scoff at. I’m a fan of Professional Wrestling. Yes, Hulk Hogan/Stone Cold Steve Austin/Andre The Giant, WWE/F Professional Wrestling. It’s true. Now before you yell out “BUT IT’S FAKE!” and punch your computer in its face (which would mean you need to take your meds), hear me out. Wrestling is something I’ve been watching since I was a little kid. WWF Maple Leaf Wrestling (it was called Superstars in the United States) would play every Saturday after cartoons and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Read more...
