There is really only one name in animation as far as I am concerned in regards to the direct to video market and that name is Warner Bros. For the last 5 years not even Disney can challenge the leaps and bounds that Warner has taken for updating old properties and making them relevant and fresh for the modern audience. In fact, while resurrecting Tom and Jerry, Jonny Quest and the Flintstones in recent direct to the shelf features the team at Hanna-Barberra (a division of Warner) have also revived everyone from Birdman to Herculoids in DC Comics as well. Oh yeah! It’s that time of year once again! Wrestlemania season! That time of the year when almost everyone (or at least more people that you think) get together and watch the 4 hour extravaganza involving big muscley men and women (and sometimes a zombie or a leprechaun or a voodoo priest) wearing outlandish tight outfits and getting in the ring in front of thousands of people for a fight that’s not really a fight...but still very treacherous nonetheless. Welcome to the annual exercise in futility where I try to predict five outcomes or events at WrestleMania. It seems that in the last few years (I have done this for three years now at ENR) I have managed very few correct prognostications despite my lifelong obsession and my regular season accuracy. Ask anyone if they know Mark William Calaway and almost all of them will say no and look at you quizzically. Ask those same people who the Undertaker is and I would guess without fail nearly all of them would respond with “the pro wrestler?” For a quarter of a century, the Deadman, the Outlaw, the Master of Darkness or the half a dozen other nicknames he is known by has been the gold standard of the modern era of wrestling. In fact, ask the pros and they will tell you that in the conversation for greatest of all time the list has three names – Bruno Sammartino Jr., Ric Flair and The Undertaker. Read more...

Now everyone knows I’m a pretty avid wrestling fan, maybe not as much of a comic book enthusiast, but both genres are pretty close to my heart. I’ve made many comparisons that they aren’t really as different as people think they are. There’s daring heroes, and evil villains, intriguing and sometimes unbelievable stories and mythologies...tights. There’s a lot of tights in both comics and wrestling. So every so often, usually right before a big WWE wrestling event, I enjoy writing an edition of FPB devoted to the squared circle! I figured since Survivor Series is here (for those who don’t know, it’s one of WWE’s oldest events that 5-on-5 elimination style tag matches), it would be a fine time to do just that! Read more...

It’s that time of year again, it’s the show of shows! The granddaddy of them all! Wrestlemania! And like every year, I have a special column dedicated to the biggest sports entertainment spectacle of the year! This year I wanted to do something a bit different and fun, and count down my personal all-time dream matches for Wrestlemania. Some of these may happen, some are highly unlikely and some are literally impossible, but we can all dream, can’t we?! And after all “anything can happen in the WWE!” This was a really difficult task to weed these down to 5, but these are the grapplers that I personally wish could meet and steal the show. Enjoy! Wrestling’s Grandest Spectacle Explodes in L.A. on Sunday It is finally that time of the year again. It is only a few days out and I can feel the trickle of saliva dropping from the corners of my mouth to my keyboard as I wait for it. WrestleMania comes to PPV, Staples Center and the gift that keeps on giving WWE Network (only 9.99). There is little doubt that while possessing the greatest fanbase on the planet (sorry music, comics and sports) it is a crucial time in the WWE’s journey after last year’s WrestleMania was met with so much vitriol and fan groaning that it seemed no new storyline could get traction for a while because everyone was so upset The Undertaker lost and Daniel Bryan’s match was so controversial (look it up it would be too much to go into here). 11008893_10203424322078892_975692984_nLast year prior to Wrestlemania I reviewed the direct to video release of Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery I reviewed it here for you spoiler free. I gave it a resounding positive review with just a few minor flaws pointed out. For Scooby-Doo it felt like old hat reminiscent of the team-ups between the mystery solving kids and Phillis Diller, Jerry Reed, The Harlem Globetrotters, Tim Conway and even Sonny and Cher. This year’s pre-Wrestlemania animated event The Flintstones & WWE: Stone Age Smackdown I will give you the lowdown without giving too much away. Read more...
