In the first season of Supergirl we have seen some incredible things. We have been privy to extended moments on Krypton and at the destruction of Mars. We have learned as much as we have ever known about the House of El in a mainstream format. We have seen the birth of Red Tornado and the diabolical threat of Non. We have seen Bizarro Girl, Live Wire and the Death of Astra (in which when it began we had no idea how much we would care for her). Read more...

Supergirl took a week off for the Grammys and it felt like an eternity to die-hard fans of this exciting new episodic family superhero show. When we last left our hero she was grieving for the death of her estranged and dangerous Aunt Astra, who was killed by her own sister and lied to by The Martian Manhunter. Max Lord was being held against his will by a government agency without due process and the relationship between Kara and just about everyone in her life was strained and uncomfortable – especially between her and her idol/employer Cat Grant. Well, I guess by now the cat’s out of the bag! We are definitely getting a sequel to the hottest superhero movie so far of 2016, Deadpool! And not only that, in the end-credits scene Deadpool himself informs us that his cyborg from the future BFF Cable will appear in the sequel! If that didn’t make us all “squee”, nothing will! Day to Marvel Now there have been elevator successes and failures as well as a yo-yo industry Since I was little, when I first started reading magazines about comics and letters to the editor the industry has always towed the same line when changing things up or making giant moves like a reboot or a renumbering. It seems that the entire point of comics is to, “give new readers a jumping on point while still delivering the same wonderful characters the longtime fans have come to love.” Read more...

Once again we delve into the television adaptation of DC Comics’ Supergirl and break down the themes and devices of the writing, acting and relevance artistically. Most of all though we just have fun recapping, discussing and musing over our favorite Kryptonian TV hero. Read more...

To my knowledge the most used and beloved trope from comics is the idea that to protect the ones you love you have to lie to them or push them away. In the Superman Family it has always been a delicate balance of semantics and of heartbreak as inevitably everyone our superhero loves is pushed out of their lives “for their own protection”. What a ride. The first season of Supergirl has been one of the best starts to any sci-fi show in history and the examples of finer ones are dwindling with each passing episode. In just 10 episodes we have seen the coming out party, an explosion of character appearances further deepening the DCTVU on multiple channels. On CBS Earth though, Kara and her friends Winn, James and yes Cat Grant even have become a team of people that through the first ten episodes are as real as our own friends and family. Each week we explore on these pages together (how lucky I am) the themes and devices of the show and where it stands in relation to the others in its own right. Read more...

Back when I was young and sifting through my older brother’s comic collection, I used to stumble upon this quirky book called Suicide Squad. I’m not even sure I knew what “suicide” even meant at the time, but none of the characters at the time seemed very appealing to me. You had one guy with an all silver mask and a red eye, a guy that dressed like a cast member from Cats, a witch in every sense of the word...pointy hat and all, a weird guy dressed as a flight attendant and then, one character that I immediately recognized: THE PENGUIN! Of course now I know those other characters as Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Captain Boomerang and Enchantress. Read more...
