After reading the synopsis for The Flash in the list, I found out that while not necessarily labeled as such both episode 21 The Runaway Dinosaur and episode 22 Invincible were perfect to review together in a thematic comparison format. While I have broken down each episode of the season individually thus far I was looking for a chance to do a starker example of theme and device for the show and this sat ready as a perfect opportunity for me.  Read more...

The end approaches. The end of the second spectacular family sci-fi show The Flash is barreling to a rapid end and the fate of Earth-1 hangs in the balance as the season long battle with Zoom reaches its darkest hour. Each episode this season as we walked together through the themes, events and excitement, we have been delighted and saddened by the ride. Last week Barry tried to cope with the loss of his powers and succeeded on some levels but was reminded how much more effective he was as the Flash. We also saw Zoom take Caitlyn and head for our earth. Read more...

Dear Readers, it is a good time to be a comic book superhero fan. More specifically, in the realm of TV it has become nearly a nightly feature for every household who adore the genre. From Walking Dead on Sunday, three shows on Monday, two n Tuesday 2 on Wednesday and two on Thursday (sorry I’m counting Archer) it has become a paradise for those who retreat into heroic episodic fantasy for our preferred entertainment. For 17 episodes I have broken down the current season of The Flash and for 17 episodes you, intrepid reader, have followed me. With just a few episodes left it is finally time for the showdown to defeat Zoom. As fans we have been led down the road to forgiveness and restoration from the damage of last season’s baddie The Reverse Flash. We walked the road of restoration as a family once divided gained a new member and a team grow into a bunch of heroes. We have also seen the confidence of Wally grow exponentially to become the leader not the wide eyed acolyte of Harrison Wells. Read more...

We are fast approaching the climax of the 2015-2016 seasons of the DC Television Universe with only a few episodes of Gotham, Arrow, Lucifer, The Flash, iZombie, Legends of Tomorrow and only one left of the new smash Supergirl. While everyone in fandom has favorite characters from DC Comics, each wing of the DCTVU has a unique feel and a distinct voice. Since being your weekly episodic guide through three shows this season (Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash) I thought it would be fun to try once again to play armchair executive and make some perfect fits for each. Remember last week, after two weeks of fast paced world hopping superhero goodness I noted that there was less of a focus on theme and trope and more of cocktail of making new facets of them to be explored at a later time? No? Well check last week’s Flash breakdown. In any case I had no idea (I should have) that the payoff exploration of those facets would come immediately upon the airing of episode 14 King Shark. While we get the promised good guy versus bad guy fight the title promises this episode finishes what the last two began with the intense jamming of so much content into one episode I could barely contain it in one review. This week was a joy.  This week has been the best so far this year in the world of episodic TV superheroes and while seeing the Black Mercy of Mongul on Supergirl whets the appetite this week’s episode of The Flash is the main course feast of Easter eggs and character reveals. Read more...

This week as we explore the episodic superhero family show The Flash together it is clear we are on the verge of a major arc and to voyage there we must resolve the loose ends. To do that you need precise and logical progression based on pre-established patterns of behavior and the clues dropped along the way if you do not want to look hokey, overly contrived and self-derivative.
