To make a show primarily focused on time travel is a difficult thing when you rely on the headiness of the plot to anchor the viewer rather than the emotional bonds of less intricately plotted shows. One of the easiest ways to do this however involves making the time periods relevant and interesting enough to tell more self-contained stories within the larger. But with Legends, as we have discussed, there is a serious piece missing from the series, even more than last season’s freshman run. You see, the best parts of the CW superhero lineup on the other nights of the week is the deep thematic approach that is not taken here and those themes tend to make us emotionally connected to them. For the first time, it is my honor to walk you through DC’s Legends of Tomorrow each week like I did for Flash, Arrow and Supergirl last season. However, as I watched the two-part season premiere for examination and exploration here I was immediately struck by how different this series is structurally from the rest of the Arrowverse.   Read more...

Happy July 4th week to all of my American friends and family! Now, I may not be from the ‘ol U.S. of A., but that doesn’t mean I can’t celebrate America’s 240th birthday with a special red, white and blue Bleed! When it comes to comics, there has been a lot more than a few heroes that embody the ideals of the American people, and vigilantly defend what the country was meant to stand for. Both Marvel and DC have more than a few heroes that not only fight to defend the citizens of their country, but  basically wear the flag to do it!  Read more...

After reading the synopsis for The Flash in the list, I found out that while not necessarily labeled as such both episode 21 The Runaway Dinosaur and episode 22 Invincible were perfect to review together in a thematic comparison format. While I have broken down each episode of the season individually thus far I was looking for a chance to do a starker example of theme and device for the show and this sat ready as a perfect opportunity for me.  Read more...

Dear Readers, it is a good time to be a comic book superhero fan. More specifically, in the realm of TV it has become nearly a nightly feature for every household who adore the genre. From Walking Dead on Sunday, three shows on Monday, two n Tuesday 2 on Wednesday and two on Thursday (sorry I’m counting Archer) it has become a paradise for those who retreat into heroic episodic fantasy for our preferred entertainment. For 17 episodes I have broken down the current season of The Flash and for 17 episodes you, intrepid reader, have followed me. With just a few episodes left it is finally time for the showdown to defeat Zoom. As fans we have been led down the road to forgiveness and restoration from the damage of last season’s baddie The Reverse Flash. We walked the road of restoration as a family once divided gained a new member and a team grow into a bunch of heroes. We have also seen the confidence of Wally grow exponentially to become the leader not the wide eyed acolyte of Harrison Wells. Read more...
