Time once again to delve into the episodic superhero phenomenon called The Flash and I am pleased to be your guide once again. So far this season we have seen the emergence of 52 parallel realities called the multiverse, learned Iris’ mom is still alive and has a son as well. We have seen countless times the skeletal structure of the show fleshed out with new villains like Atom Smasher, Zoom, Dr. Light and even a few parallel world heroes like Jay Garrick. We have seen in just five episodes that a new love for Barry and a new partner for Joe are one in the same and named Patty Spivot and she is the grounding force for Barry that Iris and Linda could not produce in prior experiences. In the WB/DC television universe the newest player is Supergirl. While standing on its own in the CBS Monday night lineup and even going against Gotham to some degree on Fox it is clear that Supergirl seamlessly fits into continuity if need be just like Constantine did on Arrow. However, Supergirl is more than just a standalone vehicle for movie adaptation or just a b- team fill in for a larger mythos. It is also the Superman show we have yearned for since Reeve left the small screen. While the DC Cinematic Universe is likely to be internet cannon fodder and contentious to the last fanboy it is clear the television division of WB has struck gold in the seasonal superhero series department. For 10 seasons the WB squirmed and experimented and tested ideas on Smallville and when Arrow launched 4 seasons ago the finished formula resulted in the successful ratings launches of The Flash, Gotham and Supergirl and critically acclaimed but canceled Constantine. So leaving out the latter and focusing on the former it is clear that the spines of all these shows follow what has worked with Arrow and any attempt to disguise it is abandoned altogether. It is time once again to delve in to the episodic greatness that is The Flash on CW. For the last 4 episodes we have done everything from compare the likenesses to Arrow to thematic breakdowns of the common running ideas and approaches that separate it from the pack of superhero shows now taking over the airwaves. Up to this point DC is king on the small screen (DD was amazing) and Flash is the golden chalice of the bunch. Read more...
