GOG #1So here it is, the Big End of the Year Honking Top 50 Books of 2013. What was the number one book in the world two years running? What surprises were to be had? Did your favorite character show up at all? Those questions and more will be answered right here, right now! BUT first (yea there is a but) let's take a moment to reflect on the year that was. Much ado was made at the beginning of the year about Watchman. Alan Moore got up on his podium and made a huge deal out of DC re-visiting "HIS" series and he decided that everybody who had anything to do with it was crap. The series came and went without making much of a splash after the first few issues and Alan Moore just went on to do other strange things. The Amazing Spider-Man aka Peter Parker left the Marvel U after issue 700 to be replaced by Dock Ock in Superior Spider-Man. Batman still sells New 52 or not. Guardians of the Galaxy came out in a big way with movie news and a brand new monthly. Harley Quinn the cartoon character that became a comic book character, that got her own solo book is bank! Age of Ultron came and went without much fanfare and more than a little disappointment. Infinity delivered, but left us asking how many Avengers books can there be? Superman got Unchained, Batman has a permanent team-up with Superman, and Superman teamed up with Wonder Woman. Finally DC decided to be Forever Evil and was going to give us 3D covers and flopped it. 2013 was a big year, big moments and bigger heroes, but in the end it was a story about zombies that got the last laugh!   Read more...

Avengers24now-620x350-1387489892This is a little late this month, but the numbers didn't come out as fast as usual and then there is the Top 100 books of 2013 too. So here is what I am going to do. I'm going to do the December Top 20 list as usual and then next week I will have The Top 50 comics of 2013. So with that out of the way let's take a look at what December brought us. First off if you were expecting DC to have a come back this month and reclaim the top spots you are going to be disappointed. Comic book sales are up in the comparisons but it is as usual a mixed bag of news with small gains offset by small losses. The Indies continue to gain ground going into the new year and there will be a Top 20 list at the bottom of this column. Besides that, I'm not getting on my soapbox this week, even I can't flog the horse that is too many titles for just a few characters more than I have and still expect that horse to run.   Read more...

bleediesThat’s right, Bleeder Nation, it’s that time again! It’s that special event that we all wait with baited breath where I, your jolly Bleeder King rounds the year up for comic book fans by giving out completely fabricated awards to the best comics, movies, games, writers and artists and whoever else I want! It’s the third annual Bleedies, and there was so many wacky events in comics and comic themed mediums I don’t even know where to begin. There was just so much happening! For most people 2013 will be remembered as the year of Miley Cyrus twerking at the VMAs,“The Pride of Canada”, Rob Ford, the Obamacare saga, that What Does The Fox Say song, and the dreaded two-headed monster only  known as “Kimye”. But for us? The purveyors of geekdom? Well, it was the year of Henry Cavill and his super-chest hair, Villains Month 3D covers, Battfleck and quite a few comics with SEX in the title. Do you know what it’s like to work in a place where it’s totally cool to yell out “HAS ANYONE SEEN THE LATEST SEX?!” Or asking the question, “who is loving Sex Criminals?” Well, I do. And it’s awesome. Read more...

blackspideysymbol-wpUsually in comics these days to capture the audience’s attention and boost sales, the publisher will do a crossover event, switch up the creative team or...y’know, the ‘ol “have the main character’s body taken over by one of his worst enemies shtick”. But back in the 80’s and 90’s, when darker and more edgy characters were the newest trend, comics would sometimes do something that would make ANYONE want to read the book. They would make a classic superhero change their normally brightly colored duds into a black version. This was tried and tested and successful for many characters, and is still attempted to this very day. And this was all in the assumption that the color BLACK was somehow cooler than any other color in the spectrum. Were they wrong? Nah, probably not. I would suppose being a reader and fan of these costumes impacted me a great deal as well. I personally wear more black than any other color. Maybe I’m one of those “emo kids” everyone was talking about 2 years ago...maybe I secretly just want people to think I have a symbiote...or something equally silly. Read more...

dead 1I have been a fan of Deadpool almost from the beginning. I say almost because I missed the very first issue when it came out, but I got it a month later with issue two. My local back then knew my penchant for Spider-Man and told me Dead would be sort of the same. To this day I'm still not sure what he was reading or doing that he thought the two books had anything in common besides the  snappy patter when a fight was going on and of course the costumes. Blind Al remains in my Top 10 favorite supporting characters as well as Hydra Bob. The Cable Deadpool series was one of the most bizarre and fun ever. Deadpool Corps, Merc With a Mouth, In Space, killing dead presidents, the universe and himself.  I have been to space with him, fought T-Ray and been "cured". I thought I had read it all...I hadn't.   Read more...
