For 8 weeks now we have systematically breaking down themes and devices contained in the sophomore show if the CW’s Arrowverse wing of the DCTVU. We have examined running parallels between Arrow and Flash, we have discussed themes of trust and family and we have even talked about how this show is the perfect vehicle to setup and launch Legends of Tomorrow in 2016. There are two truths about holidays that are now indisputable. First, not everyone gets the luxury of friends and family at this time – so make sure to reach out – and the second is that more than ever before people are spending the holidays glued to Netflix, On Demand or their favorite home entertainment venue like never before. So whether you are working, flying solo or getting together with family and friends it is a safe bet that you will be looking for, discussing or fighting over what to watch haha. Read more...

For the second time this week I have the pleasure of reviewing the initial episode of a second story arc for the season in an episodic DC/WB show on the CW. If you missed my Flash review, feel free to read it here on site as well. So far Season 4 of Arrow has made a point to rectify its tone from last season, that was more Batman than Green Arrow as far as characterization and in tone far darker than most Green Arrow has ever been. This year began with Oliver and Felicity in coupled bliss and has intentionally labored to get lighter and more like its comic counterpart. Read more...

Welcome back to the weekly Arrow review, as we walk through the season together episode by episode. In the sixth episode of this – the fourth season – it seems Arrow has finally caught up to itself. What I mean by this is that after three seasons (two of which we weren’t sure if we were watching Batman or Green Arrow) and six episodes of a fourth the loose ends have wrapped, the characterization is complete and the team is defined and each member has a role and a function that is fully understood. In the WB/DC television universe the newest player is Supergirl. While standing on its own in the CBS Monday night lineup and even going against Gotham to some degree on Fox it is clear that Supergirl seamlessly fits into continuity if need be just like Constantine did on Arrow. However, Supergirl is more than just a standalone vehicle for movie adaptation or just a b- team fill in for a larger mythos. It is also the Superman show we have yearned for since Reeve left the small screen. It contains what Cain and Welling couldn’t seem to capture – an idealistic innocence and likable determination necessary for any property carrying the S crest to satisfy fans of the ideal of Superman. While the DC Cinematic Universe is likely to be internet cannon fodder and contentious to the last fanboy it is clear the television division of WB has struck gold in the seasonal superhero series department. For 10 seasons the WB squirmed and experimented and tested ideas on Smallville and when Arrow launched 4 seasons ago the finished formula resulted in the successful ratings launches of The Flash, Gotham and Supergirl and critically acclaimed but canceled Constantine. So leaving out the latter and focusing on the former it is clear that the spines of all these shows follow what has worked with Arrow and any attempt to disguise it is abandoned altogether. It is time once again to delve in to the episodic greatness that is The Flash on CW. For the last 4 episodes we have done everything from compare the likenesses to Arrow to thematic breakdowns of the common running ideas and approaches that separate it from the pack of superhero shows now taking over the airwaves. Up to this point DC is king on the small screen (DD was amazing) and Flash is the golden chalice of the bunch. Read more...
