Ottawa ComicCon 2014 Cosplay Report | Full Page Bleed

Written by  Published May 15, 2014 02:34
Hey Bleeder Nation! Your king is still having a bit of a "con hangover", a result of an awesome weekend at the nation's capital (well, MY nation's capital, at least), Ottawa ComicCon! It was another great experience, hanging out with creators, cosplayers, and fans of comics, video games and pop culture of all ages! Nothing makes me happier than going to a con, and this one was one of the craziest! In fact, the numbers are in. 38,000 comic loving fans attended the event! Congrats to the organizers for putting the con together and making it a success! Oh, did I mention the interviews?! I got interviews! 4 amazing ones, to be exact! So be sure to keep a look out for those! You won't be disappointed! And as always I took pictures. Tons of pictures of the coolest cosplayers I ran into throughout the weekend. Once again Ottawaians (not sure if that's what they call themselves, but let's go with it) came out in full force and got their geek on!

Time to get this cosplay party started!!

Straight Out Of Gotham

First off, the most popular cosplay at almost every convention seems to be Batman characters, proving that the Dark Knight may be turning 75 this year, but he's always and forever the one hero pretty much EVERYONE has love for!

And yes, that is Black Lantern Batman munching on a box of Multi-Grain Cheerios. I told him to keep the box! Because even zombie Batman makes healthy choices!

Unless of course, those were Multi-BRAIN Cheerios...

Poison Ivy Poison Ivy & Catwoman nekkid Poison Ivy

Injustice Harley Quinn Red Hood

It's not like citizens Gotham were the ONLY DC Comics characters represented at the con, here are a couple of my favorite DC cosplays, including a guy that created the coolest Arrow costume I've ever seen. Y'know, besides the one in the show.

Arrow Zatanna

Make Mine Marvel!

It became quickly clear to me that Ottawa is a Marvel town! There were more Marvel inspired cosplays than any other comics universe and so many of them were awesome. Here are some of the most dedicated and creative True Believers I came across!

Rogue Fem-Beast Blink

Yes, that is Green Wake and Bedlam letterist Kelly Tindall photobombing the pic with Fem-Beast! Whatta kidder.

Maria Hill Cap & Loki Black Widow

Quicksilver Scarlet Witch Black Cat

Anyone else find it funny that a female cosplaying as Quicksilver  looks really comic book accurate?! Sorry, Pietro.

Perhaps it is because Peter Parker is back in charge of his body and that there's a big movie starring the wall-crawler at the moment, but I ran into a lot of great Spider-Man cosplays over the weekend. Here are a few of them, including a youngster that really captured a Andrew Garfield pre-Spidey vigilante cosplay that was just too cool for school, and a guy in a great costume that was crouched on a trash bin for the better part of "cray cray Saturday". Now that's what I call doing whatever a spider can...on a can.

Crouch Spidey Young Spidey Spidey Punch

Hungry for chimichangas? Well, OCC had its share of great snack booths (fresh donuts, roasted nuts, homemade fudge, and freshly squeezed lemonade to name a con attendee went hungry for sure), no chimichangas were seen on the premises, by me anyway.

But I sure saw a whole lotta Deadpool cosplayers! Including the an adorable Lil Wade that I believe was trying to take my wallet! Don't spend it all at one taco stand, little guy.

From A Galaxy Far, Far Away...Or Possibly Toronto

It just isn't ComicCon without Star Wars cosplay! OCC 2014 is no exception. This group of Sith took no time to strike awesome group poses  and interact with fans. Clearly they have not completely embraced the dark side...maybe they are more in touch with the grey side?

And this Slave Leia caught everyone's eye...understandably.

Getting Animated

Ever wanted to spend a day as your favorite cartoon character growing up? Well, a comic con is basically the only place where that sort of thing is absolutely acceptable. These next few cosplayers went the extra mile and became real life versions of toon town's finest!

A very popular trend this year was Disney witches. There were quite a few versions of Maleficent on hand, but this one was by far the most accurate to the upcoming movie starring Angelina Jolie, and this spectacular (possibly my favorite cosplay of the weekend) Evil Queen and Magic Mirror cosplay from Snow White. Princesses are cute, but they can't compare to a bad girl!

Maleficent Evil Queen & Mirror Skeletor

ReBoot Cast

Gotta love a good Reboot cosplay. Not only were cartoons well represented, but video game cosplays were everywhere the eye could see. Here are a couple of my favorites, including Juliette Sterling from a game that was just a guilty pleasure for me, Lollipop Chainsaw. The greatest crime of the universe is that we will probably never see a sequel to that game!!

Juliette Sterling Mario Villains

Anyone Else?

Of course there is! There's always a certain amount of characters walking around that are from different genres or creator -owned comics or original creations...and then you get cosplays that are so strange that they don't fit into any category ever! But they are brilliant and deserve recognition.

Starting off, we have Captain Canuck, a cosplay that surprisingly I have never seen before! This guy went all out, including bringing along his female sidekick...uh...Maple Maiden? Loonie Lass? The Healthcare Heroine?

Whatever she calls herself, great couple of costumes, eh?

Captain Canada & Ms Canada Hellboy Fem-Spawn

These next few costumes...they just go into the WTF file. Why dress like this? Even at a comic book convention? Well, these brave souls scream, "WHY NOT?"

This still picture does not do "The Fox" justice. The mouth moved when he spoke and everything. It was strangely creepy, could not look away. And even with a moving mouth, I still have no idea what he says.

Fox Bob Ross paints The Tick Wookie Shazam

Bob Ross painting The Tick (steaming hot cup of justice included) and...Wookie Shazam? So awesome beyond words, isn't it?

Cosplay is absolutely anything you want it to be. It can even change the world. Sort of.

Okay, maybe not. But it's still hella fun and these people went all out, and weren't shy to let their geek flag fly. Can't wait for next year, Ottawa!

Oh yeah, I'm just getting started with my coverage from this event! Tune in very soon for exclusive interviews from OCC with superstar creators like Glenn Fabry, Simon Bisley, Jenny Frison and more! Seeya next time, Bleeder Nation!
