Gotham City Breakout Continues Lego DC Superhero Dominance

Written by  Published July 6, 2016 03:20
While Disney may have seemed to have conquered the box office so far this year, there can be little doubt DC/WB owns the family home video market. With Justice League vs. Teen Titans already released and Killing Joke on the way, there is a current reason to rejoice.  I break it down spoiler free below. I borrowed the synopsis from iMDB, so if you need total spoiler freedom, don’t read it.

So let’s get this monkey smoking…

The SYNOPSIS from iMDB.com

Lego DC Comics Super Heroes Justice League Gotham City BreakoutFighting crime is a full-time job and Batman NEVER takes a vacation. That is until he finally agrees to let Batgirl and Nightwing take him on a long overdue trip - leaving Gotham City under the watchful eye of the Justice League in LEGO® DC Comics Super Heroes - Justice League: Gotham City Breakout. When Batgirl and Nightwing take Batman on a trip down memory lane - literally - to visit one of the key mentors from his formative years, it's up to the Justice League to keep Gotham City crime-free. But neither situation proves to be a "vacation" as the Bat trio encounters old nemeses on their adventure, and the Justice League discovers just how busy Batman is on a regular basis. It's a brick-tastic battle on two fronts as Batman, Batgirl and Nightwing take on Bane and Deathstroke, while the Justice League - with some help from a few Teen Titans - fends off an assault by many of Batman's infamous adversaries to ensure Gotham City's safety.

THE BREAKDOWN

Once again the people at the Lego division for Warner Bros. have risen beyond the labels of what family friendly entertainment can be and transcended both time and genre to recreate the Super Friends - yet infuse the movie with classic Looney Tunes sarcasm and a contagious silliness. Where so many direct to video excel in concept, few deliver in execution. This entire Lego line of DC Comics films (from games to Lego the Movie) has been the very definition of precise execution. With some of the deftest and hilarious writing that perfectly display the heroes and villain’s personalities. But it isn’t some cookie cutter one offs reminiscent of the old Super Friends cartoons, but rather a sublime application of real world annoyances and bemoanings mixed in to give the heroes depth and the villains their motivations.

How they manage to do all this while using classic tropes in fresh new ways astounds me. At every turn of phrase there is meticulous planning which never fails to make sure the Lego world itself is also a star. Along with these feats of creation there is also a built in anticipation for the payoff of the continuous running gag that has become a Lego staple in both the Star Wars and DC Comics Lego wings. With The Lego Batman Movie due soon fans of this series need to gobble up Gotham City Breakout as soon as possible and I assure you seconds will be on the menu.

I have now watched this feature three times and each time another Easter Egg or reference has reared its pleasurable head. There is so much content in this movie that you will be hard pressed to catch it all in one sitting.

The animation is even better than the last feature DC Superheroes Cosmic Clash and really holds up its end in the storytelling department as well as deliver the gags. This is a big double sided story arc and several times I was amazed at how well the casting pulled me into its brick laden universe when it seemed the plotting may have lulled or pace had slowed. The result of this is total and intense immersion.

The VERDICT

legojoker

Lego knows who they are and what they want to accomplish, without question few do family superhero comedy better. With Gotham City Breakout we see an expanded universe and the vision and ingenuity necessary to turn it into something special.

This is by far the best of the Lego Batman films so far and I perfect may be too weak a word to describe this outing. Kudos to everyone involved.
