Chances are if you have shown even a slight interest in comics after the summer of 1962 you have seen a comic book starring a certain friendly neighborhood wall-crawler.

Chances are if you are ANYone, you have enjoyed Spider-Man at some point in your life. Whether it’s in a comic book, cartoon or on the big screen…almost everyone has marveled at the adventures of Peter Parker.

It’s okay to admit it, what happens while reading the Bleed stays between us.

What makes Spidey so appealing? He’s relateable, he’s an outcast, he’s that guy that may not be able to tell off the schoolyard bully at first, but once he dons a skintight flashy costume and a mask (and a radioactive spider bite helps too), he becomes a wise-cracking, fun loving guy who has all the answers and courage, willing to take on anyone and any task no matter how dangerous or daunting. Who wouldn’t wanna be that guy.

And Spider-Man is one of the most visually appealing characters ever. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello one and all to Ep. 11 of FPB! I hope all is well as we enter another week of my twisted take on everything comics! Once again, there’s a spootsload (inside joke) of stuff to speak about, so let’s get down to bidnizz, shall we?

First off, I think the big comic book industry news this week is Frank Miller breaking his silence about the “Occupy Movement”. Well, here is, word for word, exactly what he had to say, in case everyone missed it:

“Everybody’s been too damn polite about this nonsense:

The “Occupy” movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. “Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America.

“Occupy” is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the “movement” – HAH! Some “movement”, except if the word “bowel” is attached – is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves.

This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they’re spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find.

Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy.

Maybe, between bouts of self-pity and all the other tasty tidbits of narcissism you’ve been served up in your sheltered, comfy little worlds, you’ve heard terms like al-Qaeda and Islamicism.

And this enemy of mine — not of yours, apparently – must be getting a dark chuckle, if not an outright horselaugh – out of your vain, childish, self-destructive spectacle.

In the name of decency, go home to your parents, you losers. Go back to your mommas’ basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft.

Or better yet, enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape.

They might not let you babies keep your iPhones, though. Try to soldier on.

Schmucks.

FM”

So, as you can imagine, this has gotten alot of  feedback. Especially from the comic book community. Everyone from Erik Larsen to Gail Simone has displayed their reservations on Frank’s views on Twitter, blogs or what have you. Heck, my fellow canuck, Ty Templeton posted  this strip on his website to express his opinion.

A lot of people seem to feel the same as Ty. “We love you, Frank! We grew up loving you…why are you acting like such a curmudgeon?”  I even felt the similarly when I first read this. I mean, generalizing such a large group of strangers as “louts, thieves, and rapists” is pretty much offensive and any way you put it. And the “Lords of Warcraft” and “Islamic enemy” business just smells of out-of-date  grumpy old man, doesn’t it?  That’s just it…it’s TOO overboard, isn’t it? I could be getting this wrong, but (and let me state that this is my honest opinion), to me it all seems like a companion piece to his Holy Terror graphic novel.

Holy Terror has gotten a great deal of negative feedback as well. Some publications even called it an “anti-islamic propaganda tool”, even when Miller called it propaganda way before it was even published.

I have yet to read Holy Terror myself, but has it occurred to anyone that Frank is parodying conservative agenda and negative AMERICAN stereotypes to prove a point? He clearly doesn’t really care what people think of him, so why not risk looking like Grandpa Simpson yelling at a cloud in the sky just to show how today’s sensationalist media and inhabitants of the twitterverse will run with something? At the same time, if it sells a few copies of his latest project, it doesn’t hurt. I don’t agree with this method, I’m just trying to understand why someone like Frank Miller would disagree with people trying to stop greed and corruption. It’s a noble cause at its root, is it not, Frank? Even for “pond scum”?

Whether Frank actually believes the things he has said or he actually  just wants them hippies to get a haircut with some tough love from a cult icon… he’s proven that you have to either a) state a harsh, blunt opinion or b) get the name of a worldwide best-selling video game wrong to get attention around here!

Now, let us turn our attention to less controversial things (My serious face is OFF)…have you guys seen Jim Lee’s Darkseid yet? Soon to be terrorizing the Justice League very soon!

VERY cool. Now (unlike Wonder Woman) let’s just hope Granny Goodness still wears pants.

Next up I share with you the books I picked up this week in…

First up we have Batman #3 by Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo and Jonathan Glapion

I’ve had a chance to read this already and I really think this title is my personal sleeper hit of the DC 52! The story Snyder is crafting with this new Owl villain is phenomenal. And this one ends with a hell of a cliffhanger!

Next is Catwoman #3 by Judd Winick and Guillem March

Another sweet read and I am really enjoying March’s artwork. It is highly Manga inspired, which I find blends nicely with a book like Catwoman. We get to see Selina’s toughness and fury as she gains revenge against this new addition to Gotham’s Rogues known as Bone (I know, the jokes are endless), for murdering her best friend. It’s like Kill Bill with cute lil cat ears, and I enjoyed every page of it.

Justice League #3 by Geoff Johns, Jim Lee and Scott Williams

Haven’t read this one as of writing this, but it’s not for lack of excitement! From the looks of it, we will get the chance to see how Wonder Woman and Aquaman factor into this rebooted origin of The League.

Don’t fret, I haven’t gone bonkers, I got some Marvel books too!! Avengers #19 by Bendis and Daniel Acuña

Here we get to see the new Avengers lineup! Woohoo!!

And finally, Incredible Hulk #2 by Jason Aaron, Marc Silvestri and Sunny Gho

I can say that last issue was quite awesome and I am looking forward to what comes next in this arc where we finally see Hulk go head to head with a separated (and crazy-eyed!) Bruce Banner! And don’t forget, all of these books can be purchased on THIS here website, expertcomics.com!  Get ‘em before they’re gone!

Before I bid you, my faithful Bleeder Nation, goodbye for another week, I once again have SPECIAL EXCLUSIVE previews of upcoming Marvel titles! Let’s get to that, shall we? (and feel free to click the pics to see an extra large version!!)

First off, here’s a look at Amazing Spider-Man #676!

Humberto Ramos deals us up some Sinister Six GOODNESS! And M.O.D.O.K. ? KLAW?! RED GHOST and his evil super-monkeys?! I’m in! I’m always down when monkeys are involved. Evil, super or whatever.

Next up I got some Avengers #20 previewage for all y’all!

HYDRA has HULKS?! …Um. That’s not good. What IS good is Daniel Acuña’s art style. He gets a bad rap with some fans, but his work is unique and gets THIS bleeder’s approval. So there.

Howzabout some Daredevil #7 previews? It’s lawyery, swashbuckling fun!

Paolo Rivera’s artwork is really fun and nostalgic. Just good stuff. Even with DD making snow angels on the cover, this series can’t be any hotter.

And lastly, a look at Invincible Iron Man #511!

Looks like Mandarin means BUSINESS!!! (I know I always mean business when I wear a business suit, as well as cranky and uncomfortable.)

Okay, now I really feel like a few rounds of Lords of Warcraft! I’m proud to say I’m a level 30 car-minotaur! Why can’t that be a real thing?!

Remember, and this especially goes out to the newly single Demi Moore (I know she reads this column EVERY week…in my mind), if ya gonna bleed, BLEED COMICS! ….I still love you, Frank.
